Revolution and Warfare: The North Before Conquest

Abstract This chapter lays the foundation for an understanding of Napoleonic governance in Netherlands and Northwest Germany. Dutch German lands were governed many different ways early modern age. During eighteenth century attempts at reform made both areas, with varying results. The French Revolution was admired feared, especially as it became clear that ‘liberation’ Europe entailed aggressive expansionism. France’s growth showed difficulties imposing rules practices on a hitherto foreign population. Which policies effective, which not? True, secularization mediatization (the historic Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803), repeated coup d’états Batavian Republic, restructured right bank Rhine. Yet, Germany, combination awe of, fear for, Empire strengthened identity formation, whether local, regional, or national, not necessarily beneficial future integration into France.
